Innovating Language Education Through Global Collaboration: The UQ-Unesp Seminar Series
Oral PresentationStrategic Cooperation 02:30 PM - 04:30 PM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2024/04/23 17:30:00 UTC - 2024/04/23 19:30:00 UTC
This presentation explores how collaborative efforts between The University of Queensland (UQ) and São Paulo State University (Unesp) have not only ensured the continuity of language education during the pandemic but have also equipped students to thrive in an uncertain post-COVID-19 world. The seminar series "International Perspectives on Corpus Technology for Language Learning", initiated in 2021, stands as a testament to this collaborative spirit. Spanning multiple time zones, this global initiative brought together 4,623 participants from Brazil, the UK, the USA, France, Poland, Australia, and beyond. The focus was on the latest applications of language corpora for language learning, including topics such as the use of corpora for language education, corpus pragmatics, text analytics for classroom use, and data-driven learning. Distinguished international speakers shared their insights, making this series a rich and diverse forum for discussion. This international partnership has yielded fruitful results, including several publications dedicated to language teaching and learning, as well as innovative research methodologies. In this presentation, we will delve into the success story of our partnership, nurtured by researchers from both universities with the generous support of Australian and Brazilian funding agencies. We will also highlight the pivotal role of CorpusMate, an open platform tailored for English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in various disciplines. This platform boasts written and oral texts from twenty different areas, ranging from Law and Health to Chemistry, Business, and Economics. Our discussion will shed light on how CorpusMate has enhanced language education and research, offering a glimpse into the future of language learning tools.

Developing Global Talents: a critical role for the internationalization of HEIs
Oral PresentationStrategic Cooperation 02:30 PM - 04:30 PM (America/Sao_Paulo) 2024/04/23 17:30:00 UTC - 2024/04/23 19:30:00 UTC
Universities have been successful in creating highly efficient structures for knowledge production. However, it is necessary to understand that the world for which they prepare their students, with increasing global independence, differs from that of the industrial society where most higher education institutions flourished. As societies become increasingly global and interconnected, it will be critical to consider the vital role of global talent, defined by the Asia Society Partnership for Global Learning as "possession of the knowledge, skills and willingness to understand and act creatively in matters of global importance”. To align with this need, universities must work to develop students' global talents, understanding that this is a continuous learning process in which there must be opportunities for experiences that bring about contexts of collaboration aimed at the development of varied and complementary expertise. It is also essential to provide students with opportunities to be part of projects that lead them to envisage their roles in local, national and global life. To approach this issue, in this presentation, we will focus on Unesp’s Internationalization strategy and the campaign “Unesp for Global Education” as well as present examples of the implementation of different strategies focused mainly on Internationalization at Home (IaH), including the Internationalization of the Curriculum (IoC) through the implementation of an Institutional Virtual Exchange Program and a Summer Program that combines virtual exchange and physical mobility.
