South-North Cooperation in multilateral research/academic projects.
Best practices, experiences and examples from Brazilian and German universities working in multilateral projects.
The idea of the panel is to to discuss and analyze the importance of South-South-North academic cooperation as well as the importance of partners of the Global South leading and coordinating such projects. The panel will use examples, experiences and best practices regarding Brazilian and German universities who are part of multilateral projects. Besides the cooperation in terms of knowledge sharing, these projects also are an opportunity for learning different administrative approaches and strategies in diverse social contexts.
Getting to know the projects:
1.Mecila:
The Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP) are the Brazilian Partners in the MECILA Consortium, which is also composed of Argentinian Universidad Nacional de la Plata (UNLP), the Colegio de México and three German institutions:the Freie Universität Berlin, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut and the Universität zu Köln.
One of its unique characteristicsis that both the Coordination Office and the Fellows who come every year to research are based in the Global South at the Brazilian partner institutions. This decision changes the historical interface of moving researchers from the Global South to academic institutions based at the North. Having the Centre in São Paulo makes possible an exchange with the local academic networks, actors and helps to attenuate the still existing asymmetries in international knowledge production. Researchers from all over the Globe benefit from being in a different environment, learning from the epistemological specificities and from sharing the developments of their research with the local researchers (from USP and CEBRAP). In terms of internationalization and cooperation, this configuration is innovative and has been producing valuable results.
2.Joint European Master Programs / Global Bioeconomy Alliance:
The idea of the Global Bioeconomy Alliance is the installation of a strong network of universities all over the world, which are leading in the field of bioeconomy. The intention is to strengthen the cooperation in research and teaching by workshops, common projects as well as staff exchange to transfer knowledge and expertise. The strong nucleus will be composed off the Technical University of Munich (Germany), the University of Queensland (Australia) and the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Brazil), which are top-level universities of these countries, and have a strong expertise in research connected to bioeconomy aspects.
At of the cooperation of these three universities a Joint European Master in the field of Bioeconomy is in the making: BioSys – to apply for the funding line, the Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM) was successfully awarded to the group and is being coordinated by UNESP, one of the only projects of its kind being coordinated by a south American university.
